Applying to College in the Age of Scandal & Stress: July 25 @Edgartown Library

Join Me July 25th at the Edgartown Library

The celebrity-studded college admissions scandal was headline news this past spring. Every family with a student applying to college now or in the near future understands what’s at stake in this hyper-stressful atmosphere. it can be as intimidating as mounting a presidential campaign, but once families understand the different components, it is much more manageable.

I can’t count the number of people who’ve said to me: “Is there any connection between your work with students and the scandal?”

The families involved in the scandal were paying for fraudulent help — someone correcting their SAT answers, representations that students played sports they never played — with a guaranteed admission to a specific college. By contrast, I teach students how to express themselves clearly and persuasively when addressing the essay prompts, and how to find ways to present themselves in their applications.

As we go through essays word by word and line by line, to the extent I can “guarantee” anything, it’s that the students I work with become better thinkers and better writers.

I’ll be discussing strategies and the process itself on. CLICK HERE –> Thursday July 25th at 7pm at the Edgartown Library, on Martha’s Vineyard, where I’ve been holding workshops and talks on college essays and applications for five years.

There will be cookies, coffee, and time for questions and answers. I’ll suggest books and websites to consult and practical tips for parents and students. Bring your curiosity and your questions.
