I lived on the Vineyard in the 1990s and return every summer to enjoy the pleasures of the island AND meet with essay clients, both summer visitors and students who live on the island year-round.
Many families contact me because they too will be visiting the island or they see my advertisements in the Vineyard Gazette, but how ever we connect, these are often lasting connections. One family visiting for two weeks has had me work with two of their high school seniors and passed on my name to families across the country. When I hear, “I’m a friend of Mary Rogers [not her real name], and my daughter needs help with her essays,” and she’s calling from California, I think back four summers ago to when I met Mary and her kids in Oak Bluffs.
Families often call me long before they get to the island, and we meet on Skype a few times. When we’re both on the island, I may come to the house or sometimes we meet in the private study room at the Edgartown Library. And if our work isn’t finished during our island time, we keep right on going when we leave, via Skype, Facetime and now Zoom.
But wherever we meet, whether it’s IRL or on the screen, whether you live year-round on Martha’s Vineyard or live year-round in Japan and have never been there, students and I develop real relationships. There’s good conversation, laughter, serious work, and best of all, I help students become more confident, capable writers and achieve their college goals.
Please email or call me if you’d like to find out how we might work together this summer or fall.
If you’d like a packet of essay prompts from about 35 colleges and universities, please send me an email with a request and I’ll get it to you via email.
