U Mich Supp Essays for 2025-26 & Big News

The University of Michigan’s got essay news and other admissions and academic news!

There is a new dual degree program: Engineering and Business and a new education program for those who want to go into teaching.

AND: Students can now apply to Michigan EARLY DECISION, not just Early Action. Instead of waiting till the Nov. 1 deadlines, students applying ED can submit applications starting Aug. 1!

From the U Michigan press release: “Early Decision is being offered in addition to Early Action, which requires prospective first-year students to apply by Nov. 1 for a decision by late January. Students applying through Early Action have until May 1 to commit.

“Under the new Early Decision program, first-year students will be able to apply from Aug. 1, when the Common Application opens, to Nov. 1.” Decisions will be made by the end of December. (Let’s hope that turns out to be mid-December.)

The new supplemental essay is in addition to the Common App essay and the Michigan supplement that’s been around for years. Here are both supplements:

  1. At the University of Michigan, we are focused on developing leaders and citizens who will challenge the present and enrich the future. In your essay, share with us how you are prepared to contribute to these goals. This could include the people, places, experiences, or aspirations that have shaped your journey and future plans (required for all applicants; 100 word minimum; 300 word maximum).
  2. Describe the unique qualities that attract you to the specific undergraduate college or school (including preferred admission and dual degree programs) to which you are applying at the University of Michigan. How would that curriculum support your interests (required for all applicants; 100 word minimum; 500 word maximum)?

Pleasea note: there is little to no financial aid available at Michigan to out-of-state students!
