This is a trick question. Of course college application essays matter, whether you’re writing your Common App essay or supplementals! And they are one piece of a much larger mosaic of considerations as colleges consider you.
Essays make you come alive on the page/screen, they reveal your academic and other interests, and indicate what you might contribute to the community, all though telling stories and the reflecting you do. They allow admissions officers to”get you” quickly and powerfully. And the process of writing the essays will help you understand yourself, your interests, and your ambitions. You will be able to articulate all of that in ways you might not have been able to do before.
